Air-Source Heat Pumps
Air-source heat pumps can be very efficient, especially for those of us living in rural areas restricted to propane. Air-source heat pumps can be three times more efficient than normal electric heat. They are basically an air conditioner that can run backwards, pulling heat from the outside and and delivering it to your home. They are however limited by the outdoor air temperature. As temperatures drop, supplemental heat is provided by a electric heat strip in an air handler or gas furnace (duel-fuel). Air source heat pumps are especially nice in the fall and spring when the back-up heat is not needed, saving you gas.
